This slab of sequoia came from what is now known as Kings Canyon National Park in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Some trees were named after famous entities, and this one bore the name Mark Twain. Unfortunately, it happened to be growing on land purchased by a logging baron who chopped down about 8,000 of these trees over a 17 year period.
Mark Twain was cut down in 1891, at about 1400 years old. Sections of the wood were cut into slabs like this and sent to museums.
Fortunately (for the trees’ sake) sequoia isn’t a great wood for loggers. Because the trees are so large and heavy, they splinter along the grain when they hit the ground. Today, 92% of the giant trees are in protected public parks, 84% of which are categorized as “back country” and are only available to explore by foot or by horseback.
Today it looks difficult. It takes us 3 minutes:-)
