Here are four rules you may be better off ignoring:

 

1. “Do What You Love”

You’ve been looking for long, but you still haven’t found a job that is great for your passion and your budget. People keep telling you to hold out for your dream, but money’s getting tight. What do you do?

Change the Rule

Happiness and fulfilment comes from many places these days, so the salary might be just a mean to support your life out of working hours. So if you have a family to support, or other ways to live your passion, it’s OK for your job to be just a job.

2. “Don’t Ever Leave One Job Before You Have Another already Arranged ”

If youhate your and all days seem like an eternity. You want to leave, but you don’t have another job lined up yet. Should you wait? Traditional advice would say not to leave just yet.

Change the Rule

If your job and overall environment become emotionally toxic, psychologically, or even physically, then it is really a time to leave for another venture. It might be financially difficult, but you should prepare for that.

3. “You Should Stay With an Organization for at Least One Year”

You got a new job, and was was going perfect—until it suddenly stopped. Now, you’d like to leave, but you’re worried that you’ll hurt your employability if you leave. Isn’t there that rule about having to stay in a new place for a minimum of one year? You don’t want a reputation as a serial job-hopper.

Change the Rule

If it’s your boss or the nature of your work that’s not what you expected, keep in mind that there are often options to change positions without leaving the organization.

Start by looking for new responsibilities and discussing a transfer to another department. If, after that, all is not in your way, update your resume and re-start your job hunt.

4. “You Have to Start From the Bottom if You Want to Change Careers

You want to try something new, but there’s one problem. You’ve already poured so much into your current career path and you’re not very eager to start from square one.

Change the Rule

You have probably already put a lot of time into your current career you  have more skills that transfer from field to field than you realize. If you get in front of enough people and show them how skilled you are, you can often talk your way into a position that your resume alone allow to get you. Go to events and make connections. It will help you in your desire to avoid restarting from zero.

These four unwritten rules work generally, but they may not be applicable for every situation.
