How to explain gaps in employment on your CV

Illness

Explaining a gap in your CV due to illness is sometimes tricky. If your career break was a long time ago, say more than 5 years, it’s probably worth to mentioning anyway. However, if the gap is recent, and long, you will have to explain in some way. You should explain that although you were ill, you’re now ready to go back to work.

Termination or redundancy

Employers mostlikely won’t blame you in case of career break or even if you honestly admit that you were fired unless you will have reasonable explanation. Definitely stay honest with all the aspects. You should present that you stay during your brake marketable, you keep on developing your additional competences.

Unemployment (Jobless in not Sickness!)

Sometimes, whatever affords you put in order to find the right job it is just not out there for you. It is not easy for this case to be given a positive answer. In this point is the key to highlight anything positive that you have undertaken during this time. You might highlight additional courses or training, which you have attended during your unemployment. Highlight also clearly in your cover letter, that the recruiter should be convenience that you have been proactive in your job seeking. .

Take care of family members

Some people take time out of their career to raise their children or take care of a relative, so don’t think you should try and cover this up. However, you should mention that you are currently already 100% available and fully dedicated to you new career.
