1. Ability and Suitability

Saying, " Hey , I can do this job-give me a shot and I 'll prove it to you is not enough any more. Today you have to prove your ability and suitability.

Every working professional has a combination of skills that broadly defines his or her ability and suitability. How well you program that computer, service that client or sew up that appendix is part of the picture; knowing the steps involved well enough to be able to explain them clearly and simply to others is another part.

Itemize your technical/professional skills as they parallel the requirements of the job. Then recall an incident to illustrate each of those skills. When you have done this , and not before , you will be in a position to begin justifying your ability and suitability to an employer.

If you are applying for a job in an industry with which you are familiar, you should also consider highlighting your industry, sensibilities. Industry sensibilities means knowing " how we do things here" . For example, a good computer programmer working in a bank has technical and professional skills- that is , the ability to program a computer is required by the employer. That same programmer has knowledge of how to get things done in the industries in which he or she operates- that is the ability work well with banker, which is quite different from being able to work well with ,say, television fundraisers.

Demonstrating both professional/technical and industry skills will set you apart from the vast majority of candidates. Show that you understand these combination and you will stand our from the pack.
